A broad acting SSRI was to be evaliated for safety margin and efficacy range for a number of disorders including Major Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Disorder, Social Anxiety Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD):
The Challenge
Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) frequently lose efficacy over time as patients develop varying levels of tolerance. Furthermore, the clinical risks of SSRIs multiply significantly for patients with specific genetic variants and comorbidities, creating an urgent need for a robust clinical screening system

The Solution - A One Plate Screening System
Key toxicity indicators—specifically locomotion, memory, psychosis, and social behavior—were analyzed in chronically dosed animals. Compounds were classified based on their Z-scores, enabling the identification of animals that developed progressive toxicity over time. Ultimately, 8% of the tested compound library was identified as false positives due to a high propensity for developing tolerance.
